Sri Pada or Adams Peak as it is known to the Westerners, is a mountain 2237 meters high situated in the South - west corner of Central Highlands. The origin of the footprint is explained in various ways depending on religious and cultural tradition.Buddhists believe that the Lord Buddha has visited this mountain and set his sacred footprint. Catholics say it is of St. Thomas the Christian apostle who preached in South India. According to Muslim tradition, the summit was the scene of the penance of Adam. The Hindus claim it is the footprint of the God Shiva. All four major religions claim Adams Peak as a holy mountain. Thousands of pilgrims from many faiths climb the mountain to pay homage and make observance commencing from full-moon day of December to the full-moon day of April the following year.
