Brief Introduction

Geoffrey Bawa was born in 1919. And came late to architecture, only qualifying in 1957 at the age of thirty-eight, but he soon established himself as Sri Lankaâ.€.™.s most prolific and inventive architect, laying down a canon of proto types for buildings in a tropical Asian context. Although best known for his private housed and hotels, his portfolio also included schools and universities, factories and offices, public buildings and social buildings as well as the new Sri Lanka parliament, his architectural career spanned forty years and was ended in 1998 by a stroke which left him paralyzed, and he died in 2003.
Bawaâ.€.™.s Work is Characterized by sensitivity to site and context, He produced â.€.œ.Sustainable Architectureâ.€.. long before the term was coined, and had developed his own â.€.œ.regional modernistâ.€.. stance well in advance if the theoreticians, his designs broke down the barriers between inside and outside, between interior design and landscape architecture and reduced buildings to a series of sceneries conceived spaces separated by country yards and gardens.
One of his most striking achievements is his own garden at Lunuganga which he fashioned from an abandoned rubber estate.

Day 01

Meet and assist on arrival,
Transfer to Mud House in Anamaduwa, a rural village in the wilderness. Experience the rural village architecture, staying in house built in clay with thatched roofs done with woven coconut leaves (all basic facilities available)

Day 02

Traditional breakfast.

Later join in a Demonstration on how mud houses are built using ancient village techniques:

Visit a local village and swim in the local tank/large pond.

Day 03

After breakfast leave to Anuradhapura, the 1st historical capital of Sri Lanka with remaining of buildings and Large Stupas (pagodas) built in brick and granite, dating back to 3rd century BC (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) on completion proceeds to Kandalama, which is another creation of Bawa.

Later in the evening explore the wonders of the hotel.

Day 04

After breakfast leave to visit and climb the 5th Century Rock Fortress in Sigiriya (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) considered by some as the 8th wonder of the world. On completion visit Polonnaruwa, the second historical capital of Sri Lanka with remains of many ancient buildings, reflecting aspects of Medieval Architecture from 10th century AD
Back to the hotel in Kandalama for Dinner and overnight stay.


Day 05

After breakfast Transfer to Kandy (UNESCO World Heritage Site) the last Kingdom of Sri Lanka before being colonized by the British. Visit the Sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic of Buddha, the ancient Kingâ.€.™.s Palace building, council chamber and other buildings still preserved in its original form,
Daring back to the 15th Century.

Later in the evening visit the Temple of the tooth relic and visit the Cultural Show in Kandy.

Day 06

After breakfast transfer to Nuwara Eliya, the little England of Sri Lanka. This city, about 2000m above sea level, was the home away from home for the British during the Colonial period. See the old Colonial mansions, some over 150 years old and are now used as hotels. Buildings in Nuwara Eliya Are great examples of colonial architecture of the British.

Later commence a city tour in Nuwaraeliya.

Day 07

After breakfast leave to Tangalle.

En route visiting the Bandarawela Chapel of the Good Shepherd’.s Convent (designed with Mr. Ulrik Plesner). Bandarawela Chapel was constructed by using granite for the structure.

On Completion transfer to The Last House in Tangalle, the last house designed by Geoffrey Bawa.



Day 08

After Breakfast leave to Proceed to Galle.

En-route visiting the Ruhuna University Campus and office building in Matara, designed by Mr. Bawa (subject to permission being granted from authorities). Afternoon visit the famous Dutch Fort in Galle, constructed in 1792 (UNESCO World Heritage Site).

Day 09

After breakfat leave to Ahungalla.

Day 10

Transfer to Colombo, En-route visit Hotel Serendib, Club Villa and Blue Water Hotel in Wadduwa, all designs of Geoffrey Bawa.

Check In to Galle face Hotel in Colombo.

Day 11

Commence a city tour in Colombo visiting Mahaweli Headquarters Building in Hyde Park Corner designed by Mr. Bawa, Geoffrey Bawaâ.€.™.s Residence at No. 11, 33rd lane Bagatale Rd.

Dinner and overnight stay at the Galle Face Hotel â.€.“. Colombo

Day 12

Leave to the Airport for Departure Flight.
