"The ’Dragon’s Head’
Stretching for some 4500 kilometres from the Yellow Sea westwards to the edge of the Gobi Desert, the magnificent ramparts and watch towers of the Great Wall were built to protect China’s northern frontier from raiding Mongol horsemen. Our walk concentrates on some of the most interesting and spectacular sections of the Great Wall, and gives us an insight into China ’off the beaten track’. After visiting the major sites of Beijing, we make for Shanhaiguan where the Great Wall begins - thrusting out into the sea, it’s known as the ’Old Dragon’s Head’. From here, we take an easy walk along the wall to Jiaoshan.

Our journey begins in Beijing, visiting the Great Wall and Forbidden City; the latter a maze of palaces and gardens, ’laid out like a chessboard’, as Marco Polo wrote. In Xian, we discover the tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi (210 BC) home to an awesome ’buried army’ of life size terracotta figures. We see the first fort of the Great Wall at Jiayuguan, then, continuing north to Dunhuang, we visit the vast Buddhist shrine at Mogao, where hundreds of paintings decorate the cave walls. At Turpan, relax at this famed oasis town, close to the ruined citadel of Jiaohe.

In Beijing, we discover the impressive grandeur of the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and the Great Wall before an overnight train takes us to Xian, home to the amazing life-size Terracotta Warriors, unearthed after 2000 years. From Lanzhou, on the old Silk Road, we journey by boat on the Yellow River to marvel at the exquisitely carved Buddhas at Bingling Si. Dangling precariously from ropes, sculptors carved hundreds of niches and statues from the porous sandstone of the canyon walls, including an immense 27m seated Buddha.

"Shanghai to Kaifeng
After sightseeing in Shanghai, we cruise along the historic Grand Canal to Suzhou. Considered by many to be China’s most charming city, we roam the sculptured gardens and enjoy the atmosphere of this traditional, walled city. In Nanjing, we see the Ming Tombs and museum and continue to Qufu where Confucius was born in 551 BC. We, like countless pilgrims before us, view the world from the roof of Tai Shan (1525m) - China’s holiest mountain. With luck, a perfect sunrise will be our reward. Next we reach the venerable old city of Kaifeng - imperial capital of the Song Dynasty (960 AD).
