Leaving vibrant Auckland we head for Waitomo, with the chance to go Black-Water rafting through the famous Glow-worm cave, before continuing to Whakatane from where we can visit the still active White Island. In volcanic Rotorua, we can bathe in thermal springs and marvel at the boiling mud-pools, which are commonplace here. We’ll also visit the Waimango volcanic valley, an area of interesting thermal activity.

"DAY 1: QUEENSTOWN / KAWARAU GORGE / LAKE WANAKA

Out from Queenstown we cycle the easy lakeside track towards Frankton Arm and onto Arrowtown where we explore this beautiful old gold-mining town. As we ride, we enter the top of Kawarau Gorge, taking time out to view the bungy jumping on the beautiful historic bridge. Then via the Crown Range we bike mostly downhill in the scenic Cardrona Valley on beautiful new sealed roads into Lake Wanaka. Afternoon tea and a break and those with energy left will cycle the lakeside tracks or Clutha River edge. Accommodation: Archway Motels. (L, D)

Flights originating from the USA/UK will usually arrive in Auckland early on Monday morning. Participants will then catch a domestic flight to Christchurch, where you will be met by your guides. Then check-in at your accommodation before you head out in the early afternoon to blow away the cobwebs on a single track Mountain Bike ride at a nearby forest. Just the thing to keep you awake and start the adrenaline flowing in preparation for the next 14 days of high adventure that awaits you. Needless to say though, after such a long flight and a bit of biking, you should be ready for an early dinner, and some shut-eye in preparation for the next days hiking."
