Situated inside the Arctic Circle and close to the edge of the continental shelf (a favourite feeding spot for whales), the tiny fishing village of Sto makes the perfect place to embark on a search for some of our ocean’s most remarkable creatures. Spending a full day out at sea to give us the best chance of cetacean sightings, we are most likely to come across sperm whales, although on about 30-40% of the sailings we may also be lucky enough to catch glimpses of pilot or minke whales, humpbacks, dolphins or even orcas.

From Tromso we head for the wild Vester?len and Lofoten islands that jut out of the Norwegian Sea like jagged teeth. Crossing the sea, we hope to spot whales plunging in the water. We’ll explore the craggy coastline (home to many seabird colonies including puffins), go hiking in the hills, and relax in the sauna in the evening. Next we make a superb drive following the rugged coastal fjords to Narvik, then cut through the mountain range to Abisko in the Swedish fells.
