We meet in Bilbao and travel a relatively short distance through spectacular mountain scenery to the ancient walled seacoast village of Fuenterrabía, close to the French border.

From here we:

Walk through the old walled town, with spectacular sea vistas at every turn, just beyond the balconies overflowing with bright flowerboxes.

Do a little tapas tasting, pintxos, as the Basques call these delicious appetizers. The seafood that Fuenterrabíans use for many of their tapas was swimming out in that gorgeous blue-green water just this morning. You can watch the boats bring it in.

Wine & Gastronomy in the Rioja - Special 5-day Guided Tour

10:00 am - Visit to the Bodegas Remelluri in Labastida for the first wine tasting of the day. This is an old winery in the French chateau style, set against the Cantabria Mountains. The winery produces an excellent Reserve and Gran Reserve wines, recognized around the world for their character.


11:00 am - We move to the Bodega Solagüen, a wine grower’s cooperative society, which produces excellent and elegant tintos (reds) and blancos (white wines). It is a modern winery built in the 60’s and expanded in 2006.

10:00 am - This morning we start our tour with a visit the winery of Carlos San Pedro, a small family winery in the old center of Laguardia.


11:00 am - We will then visit Bodega El Fabuslista, one of the oldest wineries in Spain that still uses the traditional method of producing their wines, and where the careful hand-selection of the grapes is one of the hallmarks of their complex wines.


1:00 pm - Leaving the walled city we next visit Bodega Ysios the Calatrava designed innovated winery.
