Our adventure starts in the cosmopolitan seaport of Shanghai where we discover a vibrant mix of old and new China. Flying to Yichang, we board our 5-star cruise boat and for three days travel along the most spectacular section of the Yangtse River. Our first shore excursion is a visit to the dam at Maoping after which we pass through the locks of this immense feat of modern engineering. We then cruise to Chongqing through the spectacular ’Three Gorges’ stopping along the way to visit temples and towns and to take a side excursion into some of the small gorges.

"Shanghai to Kaifeng
After sightseeing in Shanghai, we cruise along the historic Grand Canal to Suzhou. Considered by many to be China’s most charming city, we roam the sculptured gardens and enjoy the atmosphere of this traditional, walled city. In Nanjing, we see the Ming Tombs and museum and continue to Qufu where Confucius was born in 551 BC. We, like countless pilgrims before us, view the world from the roof of Tai Shan (1525m) - China’s holiest mountain. With luck, a perfect sunrise will be our reward. Next we reach the venerable old city of Kaifeng - imperial capital of the Song Dynasty (960 AD).

After exploring the lively city of Hong Kong, we take an overnight train to Guilin where the rounded limestone peaks of hump-back mountains have inspired poets and painters through the ages. We drift along the Li River to the delightful small town of Yangshuo, where we can enjoy a leisurely bike ride or walk in surrounding villages. The spectacular Longji rice terraces sit tier upon tier climbing up to a staggering 800m. They are home to the Dong and Yao minority peoples whom we are likely to encounter on our walks through the paddies.

"China Highlights
Our rail odyssey starts in the Chinese capital Beijing where we explore the famous Tiananmen Square and adjoining ’Forbidden City’. We also travel out to Mutianyu for the chance to walk on one of the most impressive sections of the Great Wall. Taking the overnight sleeper train, we arrive in cosmopolitan Shanghai at the mouth of the Yangtse. Travelling south, we continue our journey by boat along the Li River, from which we admire the strange limestone outcrops that have inspired so many Chinese poets and artists over the centuries. From our base in beautiful Yangshuo there are plenty of opportunities for walks or bike rides into the surrounding villages.
